Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure to remove one or more wisdom teeth — the four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of your mouth on the top and bottom. If a wisdom tooth doesn't have room to grow (impacted wisdom tooth), resulting in pain, infection or other dental problems, you'll likely need to have it pulled. Wisdom tooth extraction may be done by a dentist or an oral surgeon. Some dentists and oral surgeons recommend wisdom tooth extraction even if impacted teeth aren't causing problems, as a preventive measure against potential future problems. Early detection of damage that may be caused by wisdom teeth can oftentimes result in minimizing reparative treatment and yields greater long-term oral health.

Wisdom tooth extraction may be necessary when there are following signs:

  • You are getting braces or other alignment treatment As when your wisdom teeth erupt from the gums they might undo the treatment done with the braces or even if they fully erupted they still need to be removed to make the braces fit properly.

  • If you are experiencing prolonged jaw pain Due to their location in the mouth, they have been sometimes known to cause a lot of problems and pain in the jaw when talking or eating. If diagnosed that your persistent jaw pain is caused by the wisdom teeth, then this is a clear indication of their extraction.

  • They are Impacted Due to a number of natural reasons, wisdom teeth don't grow out precisely as they should and this creates a hosts of problems for the person. The end result are painful, swollen jaws that will not heal without proper medical treatment and having the wisdom teeth removed.
